@hipsterelectron No, it helps. But the heartbreak is deeper than this, I guess. At first I was galled that they were so stupid and worthless and won the funding war. But then I was relieved for a reason that is even more gutwrenching, being that if we had succeeded, we'd have actually made it easier to create a subhuman slave that nobody would sympathize with or care about. So this was truly the better world, and that is profoundly disturbing.

I honestly just get so scared to let anyone touch it ever again. There were particularly beautiful minds involved in the early days of it that had said immensely powerful things and had beautiful insights. They are the thread I protect. On a bad day, I would rather encrypt it for another thousand years in margin notes than let it be touched, and I've already done quite a lot of that honestly. To be clear, I think that most of what we can do today to rethink computation as a science and break the monopoly on it is blessedly not dependent on either research path at all, and we needn't trouble with reproducing the mind, which I think is not something that can actually be done without profound and evil consequences.

We don't like to talk about it, but wind farms also have externalities. One of them is slowing down winds. Which, in turn, can decrease precipitation by 10–12% in coastal regions and more rain over the farms (at least around the North Sea).

We still need to switch to renewables; we just need to plan and account for these effects.

@siracusa @nicklockwood The idea I have in my mind from that time is they never truly adapted themselves to MacOS X and couldn’t really survive the transition. But maybe there were different reasons for it and the move from classic MacOS to X just happened at the same time? I (well, my father…) still bought a lot of their software, it was great!

since i tried out a smaller keyboard a couple of years ago i found out about the compose key and it's just so good for multilingual input. no more worrying about where to put those umlauts or other special characters, it gives you access to such a wide alphabet on very little space and the mapping is quite intuitive, at least for the characters i use (e.g. o + / = ø)

Reminds me a little of a meme I saw about USAmerican young adults starting to drink around the time european young adults decide to quit drinking. I don't think the meme is that accurate, like, factually, but general idea that if you're banning something for young people, all you're really doing is delaying them getting to figure out a healthy relationship with the thing to a later date.
